Guidelines for Marriage Preparation

The Archdiocese of Chicago asks a minimum of four months to set aside for personal preparation for marriage. Couples should refrain from setting a firm wedding date until they have met with the parish minister to discuss marriage plans. In most cases, an engaged couple will:

1. Meet with a parish minister and be advised as to which marriage preparation to attend.

2. Attend the marriage preparation program approved by the Archdiocese of Chicago and sponsored by the Cana Conference.

3. Meet with the minister for two further sessions.

Ideally, couples should attend their marriage preparation program at least six months prior to their wedding date. For more information and to obtain a booklet that lists the various marriage preparation programs, please contact the parish office. Reservations are required three months in advance of the conference a couple wishes to attend. The couple must also obtain a marriage license from the Cook County offices.
